Which natural exfoliating scrub is right for you?

Exfoliating scrub

Skin exfoliation is a personal thing. Some people prefer grainy exfoliants, others prefer chemical ones. But if you have sensitive skin, you may prefer no exfoliation at all! When caring for your skin with natural ingredients, there are many important considerations that come into play when picking a body exfoliator. For example, if your skin is oily, you might find you respond better to coarse granules with more abrasive properties, whereas if you have sensitive skin, you might find finer granules more effective. Let’s explore some of the most popular natural exfoliators and find which is best for your skin type. (Discover the benefits of using products made with natural ingredients.)

4 ingredients we love for a natural exfoliating scrub

1. Sea salt

Salt is often found in body scrubs – we’re sure you’ve come across it at some stage! The large, coarse granules of sea salt make it excellent for sloughing off dead skin cells, and its natural healing properties restore skin to wholeness and health. We recommend this natural exfoliant for people with oily skin, as it has a strong absorptive effect, unclogging pores and removing impurities. Salt is an ideal ingredient for balancing the skin’s natural oil levels, and in some cases, can help with the symptoms of acne.

2. Sugar

Another sought-after natural exfoliating scrub ingredient, sugar granules are small and fine, making them a soft and gentle alternative to sea salt. Not only is sugar effective for removing dead skin cells, but it is a natural humectant too. This means it has the ability to draw moisture into the skin, helping hydrate and restore it (a bonus for dry skin types). Sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid. This compound boosts the cell rejuvenation process in the skin, making it look fresher, younger, and more radiant. Orobaa’s Authentic Body Scrub contains fine sugar granules. Keep an eye out for it in our store when we are all out on the town again. (Click here to learn more about our natural ingredients.)

3. Honey

If it’s mild exfoliation and a kick of skin-boosting nutrients you’re after, honey exfoliating scrubs could be the right fit for your skin. Honey cleanses away dead skin cells and unclogs pores, leaving the skin smoother and brighter. Its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antiseptic, and anti-fungal properties help heal, soothe and protect the skin, making it a fine choice for sensitive skin types which are prone to skin infections and redness. Honey is also a natural humectant, so it moisturises the skin while it exfoliates (so yes, it’s great for dry skins too!).

4. Oats

A natural antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, oats can treat dry and irritated skin, as well as cleanse it. The mild PH level of oats allows it to cool down and soothe inflamed skin caused by rash and infection, making it a particularly suitable exfoliating scrub for sensitive skin. Oats contain saponins – natural cleaners which remove dirt, unclog the pores, and buff away impurities. The absorptive quality of oats allows them to soak up excess oil on the skin. And the normalising effect they have on the skin’s PH levels encourages its natural moisture production. So essentially, oats make a suitable exfoliating scrub for all skin types. It’s a safe alternative to harsh granular exfoliants that may cause adverse reactions in the skin.
