What is natural skin care?

‘Natural skin care’ can mean four different things. First, some use this term to indicate the ingredients come from plants, and maintain their chemical shape and structure. For example, cold-pressed oils and fats extracted from plant seeds or nuts. Second, ‘Natural skin care’ can also mean the ingredients are naturally derived and have undergone fermentation and hydrolysis. Third, the ingredients are ‘nature identical’, but synthetically processed, like citric acid. And fourth, ‘natural skin care’ can mean ingredients sourced from nature, but processed to mimic a synthetic substance.

So which of these descriptions fit the Orobaa range, you ask? The answer isn’t cut and dried to one of the descriptions alone. The carrier oils and butters come under the first explanation. The emulsifiers and preservatives used, fall into the second one. And an occasional small quantity (less than 5%) of our ingredients fit under the third description. So all our ingredients are classified as “natural”, in one way or another.

Our natural skin care ingredients

Orobaa of Africa natural skin care is a range built upon a strong African foundation. We look to previous generations for guidance and the innate wisdom of our African landscape and have seen which skincare ingredients have stood the test of time. Some provide healing and natural protection, and others nourishment and hydration. We make our products from authentic and wholesome ingredients, sourced locally in Africa and abroad. Each ingredient is carefully selected, and chosen for its purity, authenticity and legacy.

Shea butter: The heart of Orobaa

Our handcrafted natural skin care range builds around one core ingredient, a moisture base loved around the world for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This wondrous ingredient is shea butter, an ivory-coloured substance extracted from shea tree nuts in West Africa. The shea women have used it for centuries to relieve inflammation, irritation and dryness, and to prevent and treat wrinkles and blemishes. They even cover their babies in it, from head to toe, to protect their delicate skins from the harsh climate of the shea belt. And sixteen million women can’t be wrong, right?

Our Charisma Shea Butter is this ingredient in all its natural glory, pure and untreated. It soothes the skin, making it soft to the touch, and is the ideal base moisturiser for your face and body as it lasts for several hours. We love shea butter so much, you will notice we’ve included it in most of our skincare products. If you’re wanting to purchase a cream containing shea butter, we recommend you try the pure Charisma Shea Butter first and see how your skin reacts to it. From there, you can go on to explore our various other moisturisers. Guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling great all day long.

Our 3 favourite additions

1. Sweet almond oil

After shea butter, sweet almond oil is next on our list of favourite natural skin care ingredients. We mix it into our moisturisers because of its vitamins and minerals: Vitamin E, Vitamin A, monounsaturated fatty acids, protein, potassium, and zinc – all beneficial for the health and maintenance of the skin. Vitamin A helps reduce acne and signs of aging, and Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant, protecting the skin from UV damage and reducing fine lines. The fatty acids in sweet almond oil heal chapped skin and reduce skin irritation. We believe that Vitamin E is very important in skincare, so we have also added it separately in many of our products.

2. Lavender oil

Next up, we have another anti-inflammatory ingredient – you know it, you love it – lavender oil. This powerful plant reduces redness, blotchy patches, and acne scarring. It also moisturises the skin and is anti-bacterial, making it a great acne treatment. You can also treat Eczema with lavender oil as it soothes itches and prevents the skin from drying out. What an amazing natural skin care ingredient! Don’t you love it?

3. Coconut oil

And last of all, we can’t forget about the humble coconut. Loved by many for its moisturising properties, anti-inflammatory effect and beautiful smell, coconut oil makes a great natural base ingredient for moisturisers. Did you know coconut oil improves skin elasticity and promotes collagen production too? Look out for it when you try out our various skincare products. The smell should give it away.

Hydrate your hair

Argan oil and peppermint oil

Argan oil is an age-old beauty secret for soft, shiny and well-hydrated hair. We have used it in our Beauty Hair and Scalp Moisturiser, giving it a natural dose of Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Not only does this cream provide your hair with everything it needs for healthy growth and a gorgeous shine, its shea butter base and peppermint oil extract will also moisturise and cool your scalp – a real “best of both worlds” hair and scalp treatment! Did you know peppermint oil oxygenates and increases blood circulation to the scalp, stimulating hair growth? It also balances the pH level of the scalp, which improves the overall condition of the hair as it grows. We have added peppermint oil in our Beauty Hair and Scalp Moisturiser for its beautiful smell, and these wonderful health benefits.

Nurture your face

Bergamot oil

Did you know that Bergamot oil cleanses the face, removing impurities and unclogging pores? Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help fight against acne, and its analgesic quality makes it effective in treating painful cases of the condition. Bergamot oil also has a beautiful scent and combines well with other essential oils, so we have added it in our – Nurture Face Moisturiser. If you have acne-prone skin, we recommend this face cream for you.

Grapefruit extract

Additionally, this face cream contains grapefruit extract, promoting collagen production and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re looking for a day cream that will balance oil levels, even out your skin tone, and provide anti-ageing benefits, why not give it a go?

Care for your body

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil has restorative properties, providing the skin with rich nutrients and anti-aging benefits. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces redness and eases dry, chafed and chapped skin. The Vitamin E and B in Jojoba oil help repair the skin and reduce atopic symptoms. We’ve added it to our Excellence Night Cream and Harmony Day Cream as it leaves the skin healthy, nourished and glowing.

Neroli oil

Furthermore, we’ve added Neroli oil to our creams and butters. Have you heard of this oil before? It’s derived from orange flowers and has amazing regenerative properties, reducing inflammation and improving the appearance of stretch marks, age spots and scars.

Treat your feet

Beeswax

Loved for its restorative and regenerative properties, beeswax hydrates exfoliates and calms the skin, keeping it resilient against environmental pollutants and the harsh elements. We know our hard-working feet need a little extra TLC from time to time, so we’ve included this wonderful ingredient in our Endurance Foot Balm, giving it natural hydrating and healing properties. Keen to try it out? Apply before bed and after your bath. And don’t forget to slip on some socks, they will help trap in the moisture overnight.

Whole-body beauty

Authentic African Black Soap, our first and most loved product, is made of five pure, raw ingredients: cocoa pods, plantain skins, coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil. When it comes down to it, we say the fewer ingredients and the darker in colour the better. (Discover how to use African Black Soap.)

Do you know why African Black Soap is black? When traditionally-made, like ours, the soap gets its dark colour from two of the main ingredients. These are plantain skins and cocoa pods, which are sun-dried and burned to ash before being added to the soap mixture. Let’s take a look at these natural skin care ingredients in more detail:

Plantain skins

Known for its high concentration of iron and Vitamins A and E, the plantain fruit aids in moisturising, healing and nourishing the skin. This natural skin care ingredient contains potassium, which boosts skin renewal and improves its general appearance.

Cocoa pods

Cocoa pods reduce redness and inflammation of the skin. And, the coarse consistency of cocoa pod ash gives African Black Soap great exfoliating qualities. The ash gently buffs the skin, leaving it firmer, brighter and softer. After all, who doesn’t want smooth, glowing skin?

A true African marvel

  • Use African Black Soap to wash the face, body and hair.
  • Treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.
  • It can help reduce ringworm symptoms.
  • Improves natural collagen production, reducing the signs of ageing.

  • Improves the appearance of stretch marks and scarring.
